Mount Tamana (Evening Bat Experience)

Mount Tamana (Evening Bat Experience)

Details

Best time for this hike: January - August
Rating of this is (5) moderately challenging.

Welcome to Mt. Tamana, the tallest hill in Central Range which is the official home of the "Second largest colony of combination of fruit and insect eating bats in the world". Come and experience the flight of thousands and thousands of bats flying out of the cave into  darkening skies during dusk.

Hike to Mt. Tamana in broad daylight and return in total darkness.  Walk along an easy, gentle inclined bench track before reaching the base of Mt. Tamana. For the next 40 minutes trek uphill to the summit but along the way (about 25-30 minutes of walking) the cave opening is visible. This location marks a grand exodus of bats when dusk appears.

At the summit of Mt. Tamana, there is a table top and a further 20 minute trek that leads to the other side of the hill. Be awed by beautiful views of the Central Plains and Northern and Southern Ranges.

As sun begins to set, and darkness appears, return downhill to the cave opening and witness the exodus of bats.  What an invaluable experience!

In total darkness, after all bats have alighted, experience the mysterious night hike downhill, using head-lamps or torch-lights. If the terrain is wet and slippery, take great care, because throughout this trek there are lots of exposed tree roots along the path.
